"Smiling Smilla" is a children's book about losing someone you love, set in a framework story about the boy Ole and his dog Smilla.
Ole and Smilla live together from when they are a baby and a puppy, respectively, until Smilla becomes old and sick. The joy of having a pet is described, but also the inevitable sadness that follows when the pet's life is about to end.
The purpose is to open up conversations about death in a safe and loving way. The language is easy for children to understand and suitable for reading and talking about death, which is really just a natural part of life. The death of a pet is a preparation for later losing loved ones among humans.
A dog's life span is faster than that of humans. To explain and put age into perspective, a side story has been included about Ole's grandfather, who is nearing the end of his life and is sad, but finds joy in visiting Ole and Smilla. This makes "Smiling Smilla" not only a story about grief, but also about memories and joy that can bring comfort even after someone has passed away.
Wadskjær Forlag has published the book, which is written by veterinarian and author Lina Junker and illustrated by educator and artist Cecilie Birk Carmona.
